Save the Waves Film Festival this Friday in San Francisco

November 13 at the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco, California. It's a one-night gig featuring a quartet of inspiring environmental/surf films, live music, prizes, an art exhibit and a party to benefit the ocean

Save the Waves Film Festival will feature:

The Cove - winner of numerous international film festivals and described as "a certain Oscar nominee" by acclaimed film critic Roger Ebert.
Lost Prophets - a new surf film with Dave Rastovich, Hans Hagen, Chris Del Moro & Reef Macintosh.
All Points South - Best Short Film Award Winner, New York Surf Film Festival; this is a film by Save The Waves.
Devils Teeth – a short film about diving with great white sharks at the Farallon Islands.

Irving Penn, the influential, versatile and indefatigable studio photographer, died Wednesday at 92.

A craftsman and a perfectionist, Penn was known for longtime association with Vogue magazine. He shot pioneering fashion photographs in the 1950s and constructed elegant portraits of many important artists of the 20th century. Equally admired for his still life work, he was still producing work into his 90s.

The look that photographers now associate with Penn—objects isolated against a neutral background—was a groundbreaking reflection of modernist style when Penn began using it for fashion in the 1950s. Penn refined the style and applied it to countless subjects—be they fashion models, artists, pieces of sculpture or colorful blocks of frozen food.

In still lifes, Penn had an eye for simple, elegant compositions. In his portraits, the effect of the plain background sometimes made his subjects appear isolated and vulnerable. He once said he pictured his client as “a woman in Kansas who reads Vogue. I’m trying to intrigue, stimulate, feed her. My responsibility is to the reader. A severe portrait which is not the greatest joy in the world to the subject may be enormously interesting to the reader.”

Though Penn practiced commercial photography, his work was embraced by the fine art world. His prints have fetched six-figure prices at auctions. Penn has been the subject of numerous exhibitions over the decades, including recent shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Morgan Library & Museum in New York. Penn's portraits are currently the subject of "Small Trades," an exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles through January 10, 2010.

i love camping + biking, so you can see why i am jumping from my seat right now!

artist kevin cyr built this pedal-powered camper in april 2008. the camper sits on a modified bike
frame with two back wheels and one up front. inside the camper features all the amenities needed in a small and compact
envelope. the sculptural piece also became a subject in many of cyr’s amazing paintings.

Beautiful, handcrafted fabrics collected by President Obama's mother are on display at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C.

The late Ann Dunham began purchasing the hand-dyed textiles when she lived in Indonesia in the 1960s.

The colorful fabrics — known as batiks — are created by covering portions of cloth with molten wax, dying the cloth, and then scraping and re-applying more wax in different patters. The cloth is then dipped into a different color dye. These processes are repeated to produce intricate patterns and colors.

sept 3rd - oct 17th

The Auerglass, which is the central work in the show, is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. The Auerglass will be played at the opening on September 3rd.
